How to read a Stellenausschreibung without losing the plot

Most applicants skim a Stellenausschreibung for keywords and then rewrite their Anschreiben around those words. That approach misses how German public employers encode constraints.

Start with the formal block: Besoldungsgruppe or Entgeltgruppe, weekly hours, Befristung, and Dienstort. These are rarely negotiable in the first round. If the post is befristet on a project grant, ask yourself whether you can accept a fixed end date before you invest emotional energy in the narrative sections.

Next, separate Muss- from Kann-Anforderungen. “Erforderlich” usually means a hard filter in the shortlist; “wünschenswert” is where career changers can still compete if they bring adjacent Fachkenntnisse. When a Kommunalverwaltung asks for “Kenntnisse des kommunalen Haushaltswesens,” they may accept supervised exposure from a similar Träger — but only if your Lebenslauf names the concrete Aufgaben.

Finally, notice process clues. Mentions of Schwerbehindertenvertretung, Personalrat participation, or a schriftlicher Aufgabenteil tell you the interview will not be a casual chat. Prepare evidence, not slogans.
